In Year 6, the children have been learning about the impact of the following on their health: smoking, drinking alcohol,  lack of sleep and over-eating.

We began by researching in groups, becoming the experts in our research, and then we shared our finding with the rest of the class.

We then used our research to write a persuasive letter to the government to make them reconsider their planned changes to the smoking laws to prohibit everyone from smoking.

Currently, the planned changes mean it would be illegal to sell cigarettes or other tobacco products to anyone born on or after 1 January 2009. This means that anyone turning 15 in 2024, and children who are younger, will never legally be sold cigarettes or other tobacco products, even after they turn 18. The children did not feel like this was enough, and therefore they wrote to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, to encourage him to enforce a smoking ban for everyone in the United Kingdom. Please see some of our work in progress. Although we have not finished yet, you can see they are going to be very persuasive!
